Why isn't AMC Theaters playing 'The Other Boleyn Girl'?

It's the closest theater to me, and they're not playing it while other theaters are (since it came out yesterday). Why isn't AMC playing it?

Movie distributors sign exclusive release rights to specific movie chains. The distributor for "Boleyn" is Sony Pictures. If Sony didn't sign a deal with AMC theaters for this particular film, it will appear at another movie chain. In my town we have a Regal Cinema and a Cinemark theater. Never does the same movie play at both. Here, "Boleyn" is being shown at the Regal cinemas. Clearly, Sony and AMC didn't have a deal for this movie. And as for the guy who thinks that this is an "art-house film", not quite. This movie is in wide release. You are just going to have to drive a bit further for this one.

The theater chains have non-compete rules on how many cinemas in the same area can play the same film. So sometimes, what's playing at your neighborhood theater is luck of the draw. Often, larger chains will muscle out the smaller ones and claim the most likely box office hits for themselves, though that seems not to be the case with this movie. Does your AMC theater regularly show art-house or foreign movies like "The Other Boleyn Girl"? If not, they probably weren't about to start with this one.
